Woodcuts by Sam Harrison

October 28th, 2009

Last week I was walking home and I decided to look at some of the galleries on the way. I walked into Solander Gallery and was taken aback by the powerful large scale woodcuts hanging on the wall.

I found the pieces remarkable; sometimes ambivalent, sometimes gritty, always beautiful and intensely emotional. I loved them.

What appealed to me most is, they reveled in the sheer joy of making realistic art. As a comic book artist I am aware that realism is not an artistic goal shared by many artists (especially in the fine arts) and it’s nice to see such commitment to it. These really are technically brilliant!

The Internet really doesn’t do the woodcuts justice so if you can, you should check out his work in the real world at his exhibition at Solander Gallery, Wellington till the 31st October or at COCA Gallery in Christchurch.
